Lipont Gallery is delighted to present “SECRET SOLITUDES,” a new exhibition featuring paintings by established Vancouver-based artist, Sally Clark. The exhibition opens on October 16th, 2025, with a public reception from 7 PM to 9 PM.

The exhibition “SECRET SOLITUDES” presents a captivating body of work by artist, Sally Clark, offering an intimate yet expansive exploration of the contemporary human condition, filtered through the lens of ancient myth, art historical homage and the raw, untamed landscape of British Columbia and the Canadian North. Clark, an accomplished painter, playwright, and filmmaker brings a multi-layered, narrative sensibility to her canvases, developing her rich, vibrant colours through the meticulous, layered techniques of the Old Masters, where light is formed optically by passing through underpainting and overpainting.

A cosmic drama unfolds in her new paintings ‘Miss Universe and the Big Bang’ and ‘Miss Universe Chooses’ where a central female figure is depicted not as a passive ideal, but as an active creator of her own reality and solar system. This figure can be seen as a powerful contemporary analogue to mythic creation deities; highlighting a desire for agency amid universal chaos. The theme of forging one’s own path continues in ‘Les Demoiselles du Canada,’ which nods to Picasso’s revolutionary figures. Here, three women are locked in an “ancient dance,” an eternal inscription, while a fourth chooses to “unhook herself” to seek a “blank canvas,” powerfully illustrating the tension between tradition, fate, and radical self-determination.

Clark’s figurative paintings, born from the “present moment” of life drawing, transcend their immediate source material to become surreal dreamscapes. The artist’s aim is to capture moments of sudden, disruptive societal and personal shift—an “eternal present” where we feel disassociated from our past.

The exhibition title, “SECRET SOLITUDES,” finds its emotional anchor in the numerous works dedicated to the wilderness. Clark’s native British Columbia landscape is not merely a setting but a repository of quiet contemplation and mysterious energy. The works ‘Symphony of Trees,’ ‘Jewel in the Forest,’ and ‘The Silent Cacophony of the Forest’ celebrate the intricate patterns and profound, almost deafening, silence found in nature—the artist’s personal source of beauty and meditation.

Through “SECRET SOLITUDES,” Sally Clark invites the viewer into a compelling dialogue between past and present, myth and modernity, and the personal quest for presence within an ever-shifting reality. Her masterful technique and narrative depth create an unforgettable experience of contemporary figurative painting.

Sally Clark – Artist Statement on New Works 2025

One of things I love about Life Drawing is that it puts me in the present moment. Online life wants me to be in someone else’s moment but when I sit down and draw a human being, I am living in present time. My time. I take my day’s haul of drawings and hang them on the wall and live with them for a while. Some of the models take poses that are so evocative, they inspire me to dream into them and invent environments for the pose. My new figurative paintings are the result of these dreams. – Sally Clark 2025

PLAY! A Retro-Speculative – Paintings by Sally Clark

Opening July 23rd, 2024 7-9pm

Exhibition: July 23 – August 31, 2024

Lipont Gallery is honoured to present PLAY! A Retro-Speculative, an exhibition of oil paintings by Vancouver-based artist Sally Clark.

This year, we were pleased to discover a group of oil paintings created by Clark in the late 1970s. These works are astonishing. There’s a joy in these paintings that elicit a yearning in people and inspire curiosity about that era. As stated in Wong Kar-wai’s film In the Mood for Love: “That era has passed, and everything belonging to that era no longer exists.” Every era has its own qualities that define it. With her unique painting style, Sally Clark provides us with an amazing perspective on those times.

Unlike Clark’s recent series of paintings, ‘The Divine Insider,’ which focuses close-up on the human face, treating it as a landscape, in this series of works, ‘PLAY!,’ Clark investigates the zeitgeist of the era by presenting full-length portraits. Her subjects are juxtaposed with vivid colours and geometric shapes, emblematic of the 1970s and which, in a curious way, reflect and embody the sitters. Clark says: “I embarked on this series because I was inspired by my love of Manet’s early paintings and the way he challenged social stereotypes. Making a social statement was my plan.”

In 1970s, the art world had seen a burgeoning of ideas in art movements, including land art, performance art, feminist art, etc. Marginalized people continued their fight for justice and equality. And Clark’s works capture the spirit of her subjects and convey the beauty, vulnerability, glamour and joy of that time. Most of the paintings in the exhibition were created in Toronto in the late 1970s. The characters in the paintings are either personal friends, actors in costumes, or people exploring a fantasy. The exaggerated, patterned backgrounds, old furniture, the poses of the protagonists and the props they brought are like scenarios created in a film, making the atmosphere of each painting humorous, beckoning, relaxed, warm, or mysterious… urging us to enter the world of the person and engage in the stories that lie within.

The exhibition also includes a rare self-portrait of Clark that evokes a science fiction movie. It which allows us to have a deeper understanding of Clark, who is both a painter and an award-winning playwright. It is not difficult to see that Clark “performed” a series of “dramas” with her oil paintings in the 1970s. Half a century later, everyone’s life is still being played out like a drama. We ourselves are the characters in the drama, and it’s time for a retro speculative!

Sally Clark – Artist Statement

I believe that painting is about communicating to an unknown observer the feeling of stillness.

‘This is how it feels to be here in this moment of time.’
I paint to get at the essence of my subject, to understand its mystery. I paint in layers, through under-painting and over-painting so that the colour is formed optically, by the light passing through the layers.

I want to create the feeling one has, when light suddenly hits a surface and there is a moment of illumination. I wish to engage the viewer in this sense of mystery, these apparitions of light.
