I lived in the North for a few years and was awed by the strangeness of the landscape. In the small towns of the North, the buildings are short and for the most part, unobtrusive. The land dominates.
When you're as far north as Inuvik in mid-summer, the sun doesn't set. The canopy of the sky appears flattened. The sun hovers above the horizon, casting brilliant golden light and long shadows over the land. In my painting, "Midnight Sun: Inuvik," I wanted to capture the surreal drama of the meeting between land and sky in the North. Man's contribution to the landscape, the row of squat, bright, pastel-coloured houses act as mediators between the dramatic blue sky and the golden orange grasslands of the eternal sunset.
