A portrait usually depicts a person’s face. However, this image shows the back side of the subject, who is a dark-haired young girl. The artist went into great details of painting the girl’s hair and neck in traditional Chinese gongbi style (claborate-style, opposite of free-hand style). The blueish dark and elegantly plaited hair, juxtaposed with the girl’s beautiful slender neck are a subtle statement of the precious youth. Petals of peach blossoms falling into her hair implies the spring season and a melancholy metaphor. The original painting was done with traditional Chinese gongbi style and technique.
