Tomatoes –which come from the Nahuatl word tomatl—originated in Mexico, and come in many colours. Colonizers first brought the yellow tomato to Europe, where it was called “the golden apple”, or “pomidoro” in Italian. When the second, red variety made its way to France, it was named “la pomme d’amour”, or “the love apple”. Red and luscious, it was believed to be an aphrodisiac—the perfect symbol for the sixth tarot card, The Lovers.
