While shellfish aren’t fruit, many languages refer to them as “fruits of the sea”. Reimagining them growing from the sea floor, this piece explores clams (Mercenaria mercenaria), giant clams (Tridacna gigas), and mussels (Mytilus edulis). These shellfish have long been associated with the vulva and as such, creation (think Venus in Botticelli’s masterpiece). With their sturdy shells, these animals symbolize protection, expression, and the delicate dance between the two. Sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) represent balance between beauty and protection—alive, they are covered in painful quills, but death brings out a stunning star pattern on their shells. Their quills are not only protection, though—they are hundreds of little hands, reaching out to the world, crawling in the dark.
