Floating 天水間

oil on canvas
48 x 96 inches
2014-2023

Floating was inspired by Chinese Ming Dynasty artist Chen Hongshou’s painting “Ho Tian Zhang’s Enjoyment”. When June was studying art history in university, this painting touched something deep inside her heart. Since then, this memory has been gathering dust until recent years, when June was stunned by the beautiful blue sky and water in Canada and somehow recalled Chen Hongshou’s painting. June has been an immigrant living in Canada for many years. The solitude along the journey also reminded her of the scene in this painting. In response, June created Floating to tell the story of her journey and destiny. Water and clouds are used as a metaphor in the painting to be the carrier of her feelings and thoughts. Emptiness, vagueness, and simplicity are the message that the artist is conveying.
