Figs (Ficus carica) represent female fertility, self-realization, and sacrifice. Their sweet fruit, full of pink and white flesh, is difficult to divorce from the vulva. Yet, 2,500 years ago, the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment under a fig tree (Ficus religiosa). The most striking aspect of this plant, though, is its relationship with the fig wasp. The female wasp enters the fig fruit, covered in pollen, and pollinates it, sometimes biting off its own limbs to do so. There, it lays eggs inside the fruit which hatch and feed off the seeds. The mother dies there, while the female larvae tunnel out of the fig to follow in their mother’s footsteps somewhere else.
