Maggie Dong – Artist Statement

Thirteen years ago, Maggie Dong began her journey into the world of painting. During this time, she has been raising four children. In the fleeting moments of her spare time—whether waiting to pick up her children or during brief respites from household chores—she wove together a canvas that became a tapestry of her own life. Painting allowed her to freely express her emotions, to convey love, frustration, longing, and the bittersweet nostalgia of homesickness. It was like tearing open a small gap in the chaos of daily life, allowing a mother to find a bit of herself.
How do we resist the monotonous repetition of life, the scenes that become so familiar through day after day and year after year that we begin to overlook them? For her, the answer was to discover beauty. She learned to truly see, to truly listen, and to truly feel. In doing so, life changed, and the world changed. This was the lesson art taught her: to look beyond the surface and to find the extraordinary within the ordinary.
Maggie Dong studies under Teng Sipei and Zou Chaoyang. She earned a painting certificate from Emily Carr University and became an exhibiting member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Maggie Dong 于十三年前开始学习绘画，并在此期间养育了四个孩子。她利用业余的时间，无论是等待接孩子，还是在家务之间的短暂休息，她利用这些零碎的片刻织出来一幅属于她自己的人生画卷。绘画帮助她自由的抒发情绪，表达爱、挫折、渴望和思乡怀旧。如同在日常生活的杂乱中撕开的一个缺口，让一个妈妈能够找到些许自我。我们如何抵御琐碎重复的生活，日复一日、年复一年熟悉到会忽视的景象呢？于她而言，是去发现美。学着真正地去看，去听，去感受。如此，生活变了，世界也变了。这是艺术教会她的：超越表面 去看待事物，从平凡中发现非凡。
