Echo Xie – Artist Biography
Echo Xie is a Vancouver-based visual artist and curator. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Manitoba. Her work has been collected by academic institutions—including the University of Manitoba—as well as by businesses and private collectors, and she has received multiple art awards.
Working across painting, installation, and video, Xie explores how internal states—especially those related to consciousness and emotion—can be translated into perceptual form. Her practice is an ongoing experiment in transforming intangible experiences into sensory-based visual language.
She uses oil, natural pigments, and mixed materials in her painting to explore the flow and accumulation of feeling. In installation, she works primarily with fiber, light, and moving image to examine how perception moves through space and body, constructing forms that allow inner states to surface and resonate.
Through long-term engagement with diverse communities, Xie has observed a common tendency to avoid or suppress emotional awareness. Her work aims to reactivate that awareness—inviting viewers to confront what has been overlooked and reconnect with deeper emotional structures.

谢影是一位现居温哥华的视觉艺术家与策展人。她毕业于加拿大曼尼托巴大学美术系（荣誉学位），作品被学术机构（包括母校）、企业与私人藏家收藏，并获得多个艺术奖项。她的创作涵盖绘画、装置与影像，关注意识与情绪的生成，持续以多媒介展开一场感知实验，尝试将内在状态转化为可被感知的具像语言。
她的绘画实践主要使用油画、天然颜料与混合材料，探索意识与感受在画面中的沉积与流动。装置部分则以纤维材料、光与影像为主要媒介，围绕身体与空间之间的感知关系展开，构建出可被体验的感知结构。
在与不同人群的长期接触中，她逐渐意识到一种普遍的心理状态——人们对自身感受的迟疑、回避甚至麻木。她希望通过作品唤起对感知的觉察，引导观者直面那些被忽略或压抑的内在经验，重新连接自身深层的感受结构。
Echo Xie – Artist Statement
I am a Vancouver-based artist, curator, and community arts advocate. My creative practice, centered on painting and interactive installation, functions as a series of social experiments exploring the healing potential of art within public spaces. I perceive my installations as the three-dimensional evolution of my paintings, utilizing a combination of materiality and kinetic energy to construct landscapes that invite pause. My research goal is to discover an intuitive language capable of mitigating social fragmentation, inviting viewers to navigate “subconscious maps” manifested through materialized emotional moments.
In my paintings, I focus on the energetic state of the individual through high-tension colour collisions and the inherent fluidity of pigments. By utilizing the liquid properties of my medium, I capture a sense of “becoming”—a dynamic motion that responds to the subtle fluctuations of the inner world. Through surreal figurative palettes, I attempt to strip away the constraints of appearance, confronting the “truth beneath the face” through the clash of colour and line. The deconstruction and restructuring of traditional lines symbolize the dissolution of boundaries between the self and the external world. My artistic explorations have been recognized with numerous awards and have been exhibited extensively in galleries and public spaces across Canada and internationally.
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from the University of Manitoba. Beyond my personal practice and independent curatorial work, I am an active proponent of social art initiatives and the founder of the Affordable Open Art (AOA) Collective. I am dedicated to promoting art accessibility through this organization, fostering a more inclusive art ecosystem and communal resonance within multicultural contexts.

在我的创作实践中，我专注于通过极具张力的色块碰撞与流动的颜料属性，触碰生命个体的能量状态。我利用颜料的液态属性在画面上捕捉一种处于“生成中”的动态，以此回应内心世界细微的波动。通过非现实的人物色彩，我尝试剥离外表的束缚，并在色彩与线条的交锋中，引导观者共同面对面孔之下的真实。画面中传统线条的打破与重组，象征着个体与外界边界的消融。我的艺术探索曾多次获得奖项认可，并广泛展出于多个画廊与公共艺术空间。

The Boundary of the Subconscious
She explores the boundary of the subconscious,
observing the fluidity of human connection,
and listening to the subtle shifts between lived experience and inner perception.

Artist Xie Ying (Echo Xie) believes that true self-awareness goes beyond conscious thought— it requires crossing into the realm of the subconscious, where unspoken, often unnoticed fragments deeply shape us.
This is where her work begins:
A perceptual experiment that translates subconscious and collective sensing into form.
Her creations stem from encounters, memories, and emotional traces, capturing fleeting feelings and transforming them into visual language. Using colour, natural elements, and textile materials, she builds spaces that can be seen, approached, and felt. Figures in her work often serve as vessels of layered time and emotion—psychology suggests the human brain instinctively responds to human forms, making them powerful triggers for subconscious reflection.

她相信，
真正的自我认知不仅依靠有意识的思考，
更需要跨越意识的边界，
去触及潜意识中那些未被察觉、
却深刻影响我们的片段。
这正是她创作的起点——
感知潜意识与集体意识的交汇，
并通过创作将这些体验具象化，
以此作为一场关于感知的实验，
期待与他人产生真实的内在回应。
她的创作源于对人、关系、生活经验与潜意识碎片的敏感捕捉。
那些悄然浮现的情绪与感受，
被她记录、思考，并转化为具体的形象。
