Sunken Gold · Drifting White – A Duo Exhibition by Jin Tang and Li-Chung Chen

Experience a visual dialogue on nature and spirituality at art exhibition Sunken Gold · Drifting White, featuring Jin Tang’s thunder-struck landscapes and Li-Chung Chen’s serene, minimalist abstractions.

May 21 – June 13, 2026 (By Appointment Only)

This May, the duo exhibition “Sunken Gold · Drifting White” will open in Richmond, showcasing the new works of contemporary artists Jin Tang and Li-Chung Chen. The exhibition invites viewers into a contemplative space where the physical traces of nature meet the minimalist pursuit of spiritual clarity.

The Concept: A Dialogue of Resilience and Serenity

“Sunken Gold” (沉金) refers to the deep, metallic, and grounded energy found in Jin Tang’s textured landscapes, while “Drifting White” (浮白) captures the ethereal, minimalist breathing room within Li-Chung Chen’s monochromatic compositions. Together, they explore the boundary between objective reality and the “inner landscape.”

Jin Tang: A Vancouver-based artist with over 40 years of experience. His acclaimed “Thunder-Struck Landscapes” series finds inspiration in the lightning-scarred trees of Vancouver’s Pacific Spirit Regional Park. By merging Western oil and mixed-media techniques with Eastern spatial rhythms, Tang transforms nature’s destruction into a powerful visual language of renewal and resilience.

Li-Chung Chen: An M.F.A. graduate from Kaohsiung Normal University and a dedicated art educator. Chen’s current practice “White in Quiet Drift” utilizes a monochromatic vocabulary of ink and white acrylic. His process involves repetitive layering and erasing, which is a meditative act that reduces the “clutter” of the mind into a serene, minimalist realm where branches and mountains emerge.

The exhibition will be held at Lipont Gallery and is available for viewing by appointment only.

Jin Tang – Artist Biography

Jin Tang is a contemporary artist born in Taiwan and currently based in Vancouver. With more than forty years of painting experience, his early works focused on the observational depiction of nature. Through luminous colors, light tonalities, and soft atmospheric light, each brushstroke carefully captured the delicate and captivating qualities of Taiwan’s landscapes.

As his artistic journey evolved, Tang gradually shifted from the representation of nature’s outward appearance toward a deeper exploration of its inner spirit. In recent years, his work has moved away from the faithful depiction of natural scenery and instead emerged from a personal sensibility and contemplation of nature. The external forms of landscape are transformed into a series of inner landscapes—visualizations of perception and emotion rather than literal representations. Through the gradual loosening of form and the restraint of color, Tang reduces reliance on objective depiction while allowing personal reflection and poetic expression to play a more central role. His works now embody a balance between subjective imagination and lyrical expression, reconstructing nature through a deeply personal visual language.

Tang’s artistic practice spans realism, symbolic imagery, and contemporary abstraction. After relocating to Vancouver, he further developed his long-standing artistic exploration into a distinctive body of work titled “Thunder-Struck Landscapes.” In this series, the forces of nature and inner spiritual transformation converge. The works reflect a quiet yet powerful visual language—one that is restrained, contemplative, and mature—allowing Tang’s practice to occupy a unique position within the context of contemporary art.

Jin Tang – Artist Statement

The Thunder-Struck Landscapes series was inspired by lightning-struck trees I encountered in the forests of Pacific Spirit Regional Park in Vancouver. When I first stood before these ancient trees marked by lightning, the fissures in their trunks, the charred textures, and the traces left by time deeply moved me. What I saw was not merely the surface of a wounded tree, but the imprint of a powerful natural force. That moment became the starting point for the way I began to reconsider the meaning of landscape.

Within the textures of these lightning-struck trees, I began to perceive the rising contours of mountains, the extension of geological veins, and the rhythm of flowing water. Rather than depicting recognizable natural scenery, I sought to discover a more inward structure of landscape within these naturally formed marks. Through painting, the patterns of forest wood and organic textures are transformed into a contemporary visual language of landscape, allowing nature itself to become the primary source of the work.

In the process of creation, I employ Western painting techniques and materials—including oil paint, contemporary mixed media, layered surfaces, and textural treatments—to express the spatial rhythm and flowing energy inherent in the spirit of Eastern landscape painting. Through layered color and surface textures, I hope the paintings convey a quiet yet profound inner force, where the tremors of nature, the sediment of time, and the resilience of life gradually emerge.

For me, Thunder-Struck Landscapes is not simply a reinterpretation of natural scenery, but a reflection on nature, time, and transformation. Lightning represents both destruction and renewal. Through these works, I hope to express a state of spirit that continues to grow and transform even after experiencing disruption. Rooted in the natural environment of Vancouver, these works also resonate with the inner stillness and life force embodied in the tradition of Eastern landscape philosophy.

Li-Chung Chen – Artist Statement

My current artistic practice focuses on exploring the relationship between the purity of the inner spirit and the minimalization of form, a pursuit rooted in the Eastern aesthetic philosophy of yin–yang correspondence and the interdependence of emptiness and substance.

Black and white are not merely contrasting colors; they symbolize a cosmic equilibrium, embodying the idea that “being and non-being give birth to each other”. Within this framework, creation transcends the depiction of images—it becomes a meditative process of contemplating both the world and the self.

For me, creation is a journey of reflection and introspection. Through a monochromatic dialogue of black and white, I attempt to open a conversation of the spirit using a minimalist visual language. The interplay of black and white signifies the mutual generation of yin and yang, the mirroring of emptiness and fullness. Within limited brushstrokes and intentional blank spaces, infinite streams of thought emerge and flow.

Such creation is not only a refinement of external form but also a reflection of one’s inner state of mind and spirit. By abstracting away the tangible appearance of objects, the work distills a tranquil and pure contemplative space, allowing the viewer to sense a subtle balance and breathing between emptiness and presence, stillness and movement.

Perhaps art can become a form of spiritual practice—each line and stroke an extension of self-reflection, revealing the artist’s pursuit of inner serenity and spiritual freedom.

Li-Chung Chen – White in Quiet Drift

The works presented in this exhibition are primarily created with ink and white acrylic. Through the dialogue between black and white, I seek to evoke an inner state of contemplation and self-awareness. Creation, for me, becomes a process of immersion and cultivation—an inward journey that explores the order and balance dwelling within the depths of the mind through minimalist form.

Anchored in a monochromatic vocabulary of black and white, the works embody a language of minimalism, abstraction, and poetic expression. Yet the act of creation often begins in a condition of complexity and fragmented disorder. Repetitive gestures—layering, covering, erasing—emerge almost unconsciously. Through the accumulation of pigment and the passage of time, traces of emotion are embedded, thoughts are distilled, and the turbulence of excess gradually settles into stillness. From this process of reduction, the intricate transforms into the serene, converging toward an austere simplicity.

In this black-and-white dialogue, both elements interpenetrate and attract each other across the surface. White becomes a mirror that illuminates the layered realms of the inner psyche, allowing nuanced meanings to flow freely; black transforms into the depth of consciousness, the silent movement of thought. As representational imagery is withdrawn, what remains is a refined and understated visual presence—a distilled space of contemplation, where stillness, openness, and quietude coexist in subtle harmony.

Ultimately, the works aspires not toward the completion of an image, but toward a state of spiritual equilibrium and purification—a deep, unbounded breath residing within simplicity and refinement.

The branches or mountain-like forms appearing in this series are not depictions of natural scenery, but are transformed into the presence of lines and a field for projecting inner states. Through the rhythm, pauses, and direction of lines layered over time, mountain contours subtly emerge—forms that are not the starting point of creation, but visual perceptions that arise naturally through highly simplified structures. By abstracting from representational imagery, lines, ink tonalities, and negative space allow the work to move beyond narrative, returning to a restrained and pure state of abstraction that reflects the viewer’s inner sense of stillness and concentration.
